Billings Gazette sportswriter Greg Rachac has been named Montana sportswriter of the year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
The 800-member association announced the award Monday. Candidates are nominated from mid-October through mid-November and final balloting is conducted in December.
Since late 2004, Rachac has covered the Big Sky Conference, primarily the football teams at Montana State University and the University of Montana. He won Montana Newspaper Association awards for best sports story of the year for his 2008 and 2010 coverage of the annual Cat-Griz football game. He also writes for The Cat-Griz Insider blog on billingsgazette.com
Rachac, a graduate of Billings Central High and Montana State University Billings, also covers high school sports and many youth sports activities for The Gazette.
The association is the only U.S. organization that honors excellence in sportscasting and sportswriting. It is a member of the International Sports Press Association.
Mick Holien, who covers the Montana Grizzlies for the Learfield Radio Network in Missoula, was named Montana sportscaster of the year.
