BOZEMAN — Montana State cross country standout Patrick Casey has earned one of the four individual at-large berths to the 2010 NCAA Cross Country championships from the Mountain Region.
Casey, a junior from Laurel, finished 12th in Saturday’s regional meet in Salt Lake City in a personal-best 10K time of 30:17. He will be joined by Justin Tyner and Jeremy Drenckhahn of Air Force and Josh McCave of Utah Valley as at-large selections.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Patrick,” said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. “He made significant progress from finishing 21st last year, to 12th this season.”
The NCAA national meet will be held next Monday (Nov. 22) in Terre Haute, Ind. It will be held on a course Casey is familiar with, having competed there on two occasions — including the NCAA Pre-National meet last month.
“It’s a huge advantage for Patrick to have run on this course twice,” Kennedy said. “We all learned a lot from the Pre-National race, and since that time, Patrick has had very intelligent races.”
University of Montana senior women’s runner Katrina Drennen, who finished 16th in the regional, did not receive an at-large selection. Drennen was hoping for a second consecutive trip to nationals, but was left out when the NCAA selected just one at-large from the Mountain Region.
