Montana defensive coordinator Mike Breske is on his way to Washington State of the Pac-12 Conference.
Newly hired Cougars coach Mike Leach plucked Breske from the Grizzlies to become WSU's new defensive coordinator.
No formal announcement has been made by either Montana or Washington State, but Breske confirmed the hiring on Sunday.
Under Breske's tutelage, the Grizzlies' defense led the Big Sky Conference in passing and rushing, and also gave up the fewest points in 2011. Montana finished the year with an 11-3 record and advanced to the semifinal round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Breske served as UM's defensive coordinator twice -- from 2000-02 under Joe Glenn and again when Robin Pflugrad was hired as the Grizzlies' coach before the 2010 season.
"It was very hard to talk to Robin today," Breske told The Missoulian on Sunday. "I finally got a hold of him this morning. He's got a lot going on ... but he was very supportive. He's been through this himself, and he wasn't surprised.
"I'm very appreciative for having an opportunity to coach the Griz."
Breske's has also been the defensive coordinator at Northern Colorado and Wyoming (both under Glenn) and at North Dakota State during the 2009 season.
