After some speculation here at the CGI and all over Grizville, it apparently became official yesterday that Bobby Hauck will in fact be interviewed for the vacant defensive coordinator position at UCLA.
According to a story in the Los Angeles Daily News on Monday (which was regurgitated on local news stations across the state tonight):
"UCLA linebackers coach Chuck Bullough is the early front-runner to become the Bruins defensive coordinator, but more names could surface in the process, sources said Monday...
...Also, Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel will speak with Montana coach Bobby Hauck, sources said. Hauck coached with Neuheisel at UCLA, Colorado and Washington, and interviewed with Neuheisel last offseason before deciding to remain with the Grizzlies."
But before you start thinking of the next Grizzly coaching candidates, hold the phone on this one.
According to the Missoulian, which did some digging, the whole report may be bogus. In a brief that our sister paper kindly shared with us this evening, it states that:
"Montana Athletic Director Jim O’Day said Tuesday night that he has not been contacted by UCLA.
"'I have not heard a thing other than what I saw on television tonight,' O’Day said, adding that Hauck was in his office on Tuesday.
'I haven’t heard anything. I know last year when (Neuheisel) wanted to talk to him he called me, but I haven’t heard anything from them at this point.'"
So this is the latest in the never-ending saga that is the speculation of Bobby Hauck's future. For the last few years Hauck has been mentioned in consideration for head coaching jobs at San Diego State, Stanford, Colorado State, San Diego State (again) and others.
