So it's been about a week since I denounced Griz basketball as nothing more than a tease, a team that thinks it has the same status as the perenial playoff bound football team but doesn't quite match up when the jerseys go on.
Ok ok, I didn't quite say that, but it's hard to say what Griz basketball really is these days. A week ago they sported a 6-7 record and were coming off their second three game slide, getting beat by an average of 18 points. To me, the still-not-so-clear (what is clear in Montana hoops?) favorite was Montana State going into the rivalry game.
Well how does a convincing 73-59 win over their biggest rival sound? How about a thrilling come-from-behind effort against Northern Arizona (an NAU team that, while 4-11, took Portland State to four overtimes earlier in the month)? How about Anthony Johnson, who scored 32 of the Grizzlies 62 points in the one-point win and was a stalwart at the line, nailing 18-of-19? The second coming of Virgil Matthews perhaps? Maybe something better? He certainly has the looks of the playmaker the Griz so desperately need.
Where are we now though? If anything the Griz are consistent in putting short little spurts together - for better or worse. Other than the opening loss, Montana has put together win streaks of two, two and four and losing streaks of three on two separate ocassions. Who are the real Griz?
