SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific University of California defeated No. 19-ranked Rocky Mountain College 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12 Tuesday during the opening round of pool play at the 31st NAIA women's volleyball championships at Gateway Arena.

APU, seeded second in the four-team pool, improved to 28-6 on the season, while third-seeded Rocky is 24-8. 

The Bears will continue pool play on Wednesday with a noon match against No. 5-ranked Columbia College of Missouri. Columbia began play on Tuesday with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 triumph over No. 24-ranked Oklahoma City.

Columbia is 38-2 this season and has won its last 26 matches.

Rocky will play Oklahoma City on Thursday.
