OMAHA, Neb. — Forward Ryan O’Neil scored from inside the penalty box late in the second overtime Friday as second-seeded University of Great Falls slipped past No. 3 Rocky Mountain College 1-0 in the semifinals of the NAIA Unaffiliated Conference Tournament for men’s soccer.
O’Neil’s winning goal was unassisted and came at the 108:59 mark.
The win catapulted the Argos, 14-3-1, into today’s championship match against top-seeded Bellevue (Neb.) University, 13-5-1. The winner will receive an automatic berth into the NAIA national tournament.
Bellevue defeated Utah’s Westminster College 2-1 in the second semifinal game at Tranquility Park on Tom White’s goal at the 78:16 mark. The winning Bruins outshot the fourth-seeded Griffins 15-3.
Rocky’s season — its second for the men — ended with a 9-7 record.
The game was hotly contested between the two Frontier Conference rivals with a total of seven yellow cards issued — four of them against the Battlin’ Bears.
Rocky had 13 shots in the game, with four of them on goal. UGF had 19 shots, with seven on goal.
Zach Johnson was the winning goalie for the Argos with four saves in nearly 109 minutes of play. Rocky goalie Joachim Soderstrom also went the distance with six saves.
The Bears and Argos split their two meetings during the regular season.
