BILLINGS — The Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball tournament will move from Billings to Portland, Oregon, the GNAC and Montana State Billings announced on Thursday.
Rain in Billings' forecast next week and "challenges with field conditions at Avitus Group Stadium" prompted the conference to move the tournament, according to a GNAC press release.
The tournament, which features the top four teams in the GNAC's regular-season standings, will be played at Concordia University as originally scheduled from May 2-4.
Administrators from MSUB and athletic directors from the eight other GNAC schools that sponsor softball were consulted about the decision to relocate, according to the press release.
“After consulting with Montana State Billings, it became clear that we would risk not being able to complete the tournament if we remained in Billings,” GNAC commissioner Dave Haglund said in the press release. “I am grateful to Concordia athletic director Lauren Eads and her staff for stepping up to host the GNAC Softball Championships on short notice. We are also grateful to athletic director Krista Montague and the Montana State Billings staff for working with us on the best solution for our softball student-athletes.”
