LARAMIE — Wyoming coach Craig Bohl rounded out his defensive coaching staff Monday with a seasoned hire.

Jay Niemann, who’s coached college football for 34 years, was added as the Cowboys’ linebackers coach. Niemann comes to Wyoming after serving as a defensive coordinator at the Football Bowl Subdivision level the last eight years, most recently at Rutgers. He was the defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois from 2011-15.

Niemann also had stints as a coordinator at Northern Iowa, Drake and Hardin-Simmons University. Niemann compiled a 32-29 record as the head coach at Simpson College, a Division III school in Indianola, Iowa, from 2002-07.

He doubled as Rutgers’ linebackers coach and also coached safeties at NIU, where he helped develop San Francisco 49ers safety and former first-round pick Jimmy Ward. He also helped coach linebackers during his time at UNI, Washington and Western Washington, where he started his coaching career in 1985.
