DOUGLAS, Wyo. - Senior tailback Cody Bohlander accounted for 22 points himself as Douglas beat Buffalo 34-21 for the state Class 4A championship Saturday.
It was Douglas' first state title since 1978 and third overall. The Bearcats finish the season with an 8-2 record.
Buffalo lost in the championship game for the second year in a row. It closed out the year at 7-3.
Bohlander rushed for 70 yards, two touchdowns and one 2-point conversion. He also caught five passes for 65 yards and one TD. And he kicked two PATs.
The two teams traded scores in the first quarter for 7-7 tie, but Douglas scored 21 straight points before Buffalo scored again just before half, leaving Douglas ahead 28-14 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. Douglas went up 34-14 in the fourth and Buffalo answered late in the quarter.
Douglas stopped Buffalo with about 2:50 left in the game and ran the clock out for the win.
Bohlander scored on runs of 3 and 2 yards. His touchdown reception covered 31 yards.
Quarterback Shane Richendifer completed 13 of 21 passes for 179 yards and two TDs for Douglas.
Michael Hogan hauled in one of the TD passes, and Jake Vogel scored on a 10-yard run for the Bearcats.
Dan Long led Buffalo with 47 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Ryan Kinzer had a 1-yard TD run, and Cameron Ostrom caught an 18-yard TD pass from Tyler Gibbs for the Bison. Aaron Tyser had four receptions for 33 yards.
Gillette 23, Green River 21
GILLETTE, Wyo. - Senior halfback Logan Pokallus rushed for 144 yards as Gillette came from behind and held on to beat Green River 23-21 for the state Class 5A title Saturday.
It was the fourth title for Gillette, which finished the season at 10-2.
Green River closed out the year at 9-3.
Gillette fell behind early, with Green River taking advantage of two fumbles to take a 14-0 edge in the first six minutes of the game on runs of 17 and 3 yards by Colter Rood.
Gillette then scored 23 unanswered points.
Green River pulled to within two points on a 17-yard interception return.
With 12 seconds left, a snap sailed over the head of Gillette punter Chris Schultz on fourth down, giving the Wolves the ball on the Gillette 23-yard line.
Green River immediately opted to try for a 40-yard field goal by Rood, who's longest field goal this season was from 63 yards out. Hitting into a swirling breeze, his kick sailed just wide left and missed by about 2 feet.
"This is the best feeling in the world," said Gillette junior Steven Turpin, who collected a fumble and an interception to help the Camels rebound in the first half. "We were just thinking block (the kick) the whole way. I saw it go up and it just seemed to hang there for an hour."
Green River, which came into the game averaging 414 yards in offense per game, was held to 262 by the Camels. Gillette managed 275 total yards.
Glenrock 18, Kemmerer 0
GLENROCK, Wyo. - Glenrock shut out defending champion Kemmerer 18-0 for the state Class 3A championship Saturday.
The title was the eighth overall for Glenrock, which ended the season with an 11-0 record. The last time Glenrock went undefeated was in 1977.
Kemmerer closed out the season at 10-1.
The game featured a rematch of the 2007 title contest which Kemmerer won 20-0. It was the third time in the last four years the two teams met for the state championship.
Burns 41, Big Horn 12
BURNS, Wyo. - Burns held Big Horn to just 229 yards of total offense and forced five turnovers to claim the Class 2A championship with a convincing 41-12 win Saturday.
The Broncs finished the season at 11-0. Big Horn ended at 10-1.
Burns held the Big Horn offense to nearly 100 yards below its season average.
Southeast 12, Burlington 0
BURLINGTON, Wyo. - Tanner May rushed for 115 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown, as Southeast shut out Burlington 12-0 for the state Class 1A title Saturday.
It was the third consecutive state title for Southeast, which ended the season with a 9-2 record.
Burlington sustained its first shutout of the season and closed out the year at 9-2.
Southeast outgained Burlington 219-75 on the ground.
