MIAMI — The National Football League announced that Miami Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter has been named the AFC special teams player of the week for games played Dec. 3, 6-7.
The Helena native and former University of Montana kicker accounted for 10 points, including a 41-yard field goal with 1:02 remaining, in Miami’s 22-21 victory over the New England Patriots last Sunday. It was Carpenter’s third game-winning kick of his career and second of the 2009 season.
Carpenter has converted 19 of 20 of his field goal attempts this season, including eight that were 40 yards or longer. His career long of 52 yards came against the Patriots on Nov. 8.
Carpenter is tied with Minnesota’s Ryan Longwell for the NFL lead in field goal accuracy at 95 percent.
This is Carpenter’s second special teams player of the week honor. He won for his Week 14 efforts against the Buffalo Bills in Toronto during the 2008 season.
