HELENA - Big plays in the third quarter helped top-ranked and defending NAIA national champion Carroll College pull away for a 36-10 victory over No. 25 Montana-Western.

Carroll (3-0, 2-0 Frontier) had to settle for three field goals in the first half and led just 16-10 before stealing the momentum with two big plays in the third quarter.

Jed Thomas scored on a 45-yard run with 7:42 left in the third and Robb Latrielle connected with Zach Zawacki on a 50-yard halfback pass for a touchdown at the 6:40 mark to put the Saints up 29-10. Latrielle is Carroll's backup quarterback who led the Saints through last year's playoffs when starter Tyler Emmert was injured.

Emmert passed for 133 yards and an 8-yard score to Jed Thomas with 14:13 left in the game. Emmert ran for an 8-yard score in the second quarter as Carroll took a 13-3 lead with 4:43 left in the half.
