Hysham Pirates

Coach: Shawn Hollowell (1st season)

Noteworthy: Hollowell was the Hysham head football coach for 17 seasons and head boys basketball coach for six. He was an assistant football coach at his alma mater, Rocky Mountain College, for three years.

Coach Hollowell says: “We have a very young team with great determination. We only have one senior and our girls will have to play team ball to be successful. Our goals include playing Saturday night at our District tournament in Miles City.”

Jordan Mustangs

Coach: Tom Billing (3rd season)

Coach Billing says: “We have more depth at every position, which makes practice more competitive and improves every one.”

Melstone Broncs

Coach: Ole Eike (1st season)

Returning starters: Camie McCaffree, Sr.; Sara Lawson, Sr.

Noteworthy: Both McCaffree and Lawson were all-conference last year. … Eike attended school at Melstone and Billings Central before graduating in 1998 and then attending UM Western and MSU Billings.

Coach Eike says: “We have a very young team with seven sophomores and freshmen mixed in with two seniors and one junior. We are just looking to improve every day and be playing our best at tournament time.”

Northern Cheyenne Lady Eagles

Record last season: 0-18

Coach: August Scalpcane (1st season)

Returning starter: Rhea Littlesun, Jr., guard.

Other key players: Darisa Swank, Sr., guard; Jade Menendez, Sr., forward; Veronic Vance, Jr., guard; Aaliyah Cunningham, Fr., forward.

Noteworthy: Scalpcane is a Colstrip High graduate of 1992. … Swank transferred from Lame Deer.

Coach Scalpcane says: “This team has not won a game in four years. That is all about to change this year through hard work and dedication. We’re going to make things happen following the leadership of Darisa Swank.”

Plevna Cougars

Record last season: 19-6

Coach: Britt Buerkle (4th season).

Returning starters: Kelly Gray, Sr., guard; Jalyn Walker, So., guard; Lexyn Walker, So., guard; Shawanna Steffes, So., forward.

Other key players: Abby Tunby, So., forward.

Coach Buerkle says: “We are young but experienced. It should be a fun year. There are a lot of good teams in our conference so it could be interesting.”

St. Labre Lady Braves

Coach: Curt Shaw (1st season)

Returning starter: Johnee Jo Walks Along.

Noteworthy: St. Labre competed in District 3B last year. … Walks Along averaged six boards per game last year. … Shaw had an overall record of 214-168. He is a graduate of Belle Fourche High School in South Dakota, class of 1967 and attended Black Hills State University.

Coach Shaw says: “With a new coach and new system it will take a little time to put the pieces together. We are working to get better every day and we will be competitive in every game and look forward to a successful season.”

Terry Terriers

Coach: Sharilyn Kortum (2nd season)

Record last season: 19-8, state qualifier

Returning starters: Carly Stickel, 5-10, Jr., guard; Dani Dukart, 5-9, Jr., guard; Amanda Haidle, 5-10, Jr., forward.

Noteworthy: The Terriers don’t have a senior. They do have six juniors.

Coach Kortum says: “We had a lot of fun last year and hope to do the same in 2010. Our goal is to work hard, work together and compete. We’re excited about the opportunity to continue building where we finished in 2009.”
