Here we go into the new year …
Team of the week: It may not have been a pretty week for the Glendive Lady Red Devils — they scored just 71 points in two games — but they did pick up two hard-earned victories, and that’s what counts. Glendive snuck by Dickinson, N.D., 30-29 on Friday night and then edged Eastern A rival Miles City 41-39 on Saturday night. Lady Red Devils coach Richy Powell, who is in his 17th season at Glendive, said that’s just his third victory at Miles City.
Noteworthy: When Billings West defeated Laurel 68-38 on Saturday night, it ended a six-game losing streak to Class A teams for the Lady Bears. … Roundup used an 18-2 fourth quarter to defeat Columbus 47-45 on Friday night in a game that surely will have a big impact in the final 4B standings. The Lady Panthers couldn’t duplicate the trick the next night as they were outscored 19-9 in the fourth quarter by Huntley Project in a 49-39 loss. … Lodge Grass’s Lanita Black Eagle had a big night Friday, scoring 33 points in a 78-40 win over Lame Deer. … Plentywood’s Gina Barry was money from the free throw line Saturday night. She hit 18 of 20 foul shots in a 62-51 win over Glasgow. … Broadus denied Baker coach Clayton Hornung his 400th career victory with a 52-48 overtime win on Saturday. Next try for Hornung and the Lady Spartans will be Friday at St. Labre. … Melstone’s Stephanie Newman hit six 3-pointers in a 67-43 win over Wibaux to tie a school record. … The new co-op of Harlowton-Ryegate continued to roll along. By beating Bridger-Fromberg on Saturday, H-R moved to 6-0. … After sitting out the first part of the season due to shoulder surgery, Fairview’s two-time all-stater Katie Hardy made an impressive season debut with a 33-point effort in a 59-41 win over Froid-Lake on Saturday.
I’ve got my eye on …: Billings Senior at Billings West, Tuesday. Both these teams are looking like they could be contenders for one of the top two spots in the Eastern AA for a bye into the state tournament. There is a long way to go, of course, but the winner of this game could set a good tone for the rest of its Eastern AA schedule.
In addition …: As I looked through the schedules, a lot of upcoming games caught my eye. Among them: Lodge Grass at Shepherd, Thursday. This is a chance for the Indians to really become players in the 4B, while it’s a chance for Shepherd to say that despite the league-opening loss to Columbus, ‘we’re not going away.’ Harlowton-Ryegate at Absarokee, Friday. If Absarokee gets past Joliet on Tuesday, this will be a battle of 6C unbeatens.
