While driving home from The Gazette late Sunday night I heard the John Cougar Mellencamp classic "Small Town" on the radio.
How appropriate that was considering the state wrestling tournament is just 11 days away.
The big story at this year's tourney will be how Chinook star Ben Stroh, Conrad standout Luke Schlosser, Glasgow super grappler Luke Zeiger and Great Falls champion Cole Mendenhall are all chasing their fourth Montana state wrestling championship.
Stroh, Schlosser and Zeiger are all from the B-C classification. While Mendenhall is from Great Falls, a Class AA school, I'd still consider the Electric City -- and most cities in our great state -- a small town in the grand scheme of things.
Regardless, the foursome arrive in Billings late next week and invade Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark -- the Madison Square Garden of the Treasure State -- with high hopes and dreams. Good luck to them at divisionals and state.
What a great "Small Town" story.
The 1985 Mellencamp song is always great to listen to and before writing this blog I watched it on YouTube.
Being a Boston Celtics fan and watching Larry Bird play in the 1980s and early 90s, I remember the song being linked to the French Lick, Ind., native.
On YouTube, one could find videos of Bird featuring "Small Town." Some of the moments can give a fan goosebumps.
For wrestling spectators it would probably be neat for the 'Foursome seeking Four' and other fan favorites to provide some goosebumps moments the next two weekends. Several teams might, too. The Montana state wrestling tournament -- where "Small Town" wrestlers can create big-time moments.
