The Montana Coaches Association has announced its coach of the year selections for the winter high school sports season.
Headlining the list is Laurel girls basketball coach Amber Griffith, who guided the Locomotives to a 19-6 record and the Class A state championship this past season. Malta’s Dave Costin was named the Class B boys coach of the year after leading the Mustangs to their second consecutive state title.
Billings Central’s Brendan Smith was honored as Class A’s boys and girls swimming coach of the year. Smith’s teams each won state championships. Forsyth’s Scott Weber took home the award for Class B-C wrestling after his Dogies won another team title.
Other boys basketball coaches selected included Jeff Hays of Missoula Hellgate (Class AA), Keith Chambers of Stevensville (A) and Duane Bergum of Roy Winifred (C). Girls basketball coaches named were Karen Deden of Missoula Sentinel (AA), Dustin Gordon of Fairfield (B) and Jeff Graham of Belt (C).
Great Falls High’s Steve Komac (AA) and Havre’s Scott Filius (A) were the other wrestling coaches of the year.
Helena High’s Carrie Brown and Missoula Hellgate’s Helena Houlihan shared the award for Class AA girls swimming.
