GREAT FALLS -- Glasgow opened play Thursday at the State B-C softball tournament by fighting off St. Ignatius 4-3.

The Scotties, who finished second to Florence at last year's tournament, received a home run from Sadie Sukut and a winning performance on the mound from Shyla Bergtoll.

Bergtoll added a triple to the Glasgow attack, which included four hits for extra bases.

Alex Page swatted two hits, including a double. Sage Sukut also had a double.

In other first-round games, defending champion Florence knocked off Huntley Project 8-4, Ronan beat Stillwater 17-7 and Deer Lodge fought off Shepherd 14-13.

Florence jumped ahead 6-1 in the first two innings against Huntley Project, while Ronan used a nine-run second inning to set the stage for its victory over Stillwater.

Ronan finished with 21 hits in the five-inning contest.

Deer Lodge and Shepherd combined for 27 runs on 29 hits. The Wardens pushed home two runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the win.
