BUTTE -- Kailey Grover scored the winning run and Tara Russell struck out nine and allowed just two hits as the Laurel Locomotives earned a 2-1, eight-inning victory over Butte Central Tuesday afternoon.
Grover, the number nine hitter in the Locomotive'a lineup, walked to start the extra frame and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittany Goodson. Kelcie Wood followed with an single to center, scoring Grover.
Russell (3-1) closed the door on the Maroons in the bottom half of the inning for her third victory of the season.
After tying the game 1-1 in the fifth inning, Butte Central squandered a late oppurtunity to pull out the win. With the winning run on third in the bottom of the seventh, Russell struck out the side to end the threat and force extra innings.
The loss was just the second of the season for Butte Central as they dropped to 8-2. Laurel improved to 4-2 with the win.
