POCATELLO, Idaho -- Ryan Crouser, a high school senior from Gresham, Ore., shattered the national high school indoor shot put record on Saturday with a throw of 77 feet, 2 3/4 inches at the Simplot Games on the Idaho State campus.

Crouser passed the previous record of 74-11, set in 1990 by Brent Noon, by more than two feet.

Crouser, who's headed to the University of Texas in the fall, twice broke the record in a span of six throws, first recording a mark of 75-3 1/2 on his second attempt. He followed that up with his record-breaking throw on his fifth toss.

His mark is the second-best ever, indoor or outdoor, by a high school athlete. Michael Carter owns the overall record with a throw of 81-3 1/2 set in 1979.

Earlier this season, Crouser set the U.S. prep indoor record by throwing the 16-pound shot 63-11 to break the 27-year-old record.
