KALISPELL — Flathead High assistant wrestling coach Jeff Anderson has been selected as the 2006 assistant coach of the year by Wrestling U.S.A. Magazine.
The award was announced in the magazine's May 30 edition and Anderson was surprised with the presentation and an all-school assembly last week.
"I was completely clueless — to the point where I am a little overwhelmed," Anderson said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime event."
Anderson was the head coach at Flathead High from 1993-2001 before turning over the reins to Jeff Thompson, who along with Daniel Ham and Tom Vanek nominated him for the award.
"I really enjoyed the (head coaching) position, but I realized my best place in dealing with the athletes was as an assistant," Anderson said.
Anderson was a state champion at Flathead High in 1982 and a high-school All-American.
