MISSOULA — Starting pitcher Franklin Medina hurled eight shutout innings Tuesday night in helping the Missoula Osprey cool off the Billings Mustangs 3-0 in Pioneer League baseball play.
Billings had scored a total of 42 runs in its four previous games, but Medina and reliever Jesus Silva scattered eight hits in recording the shutout.
Medina, 1-0, gave up seven hits and struck out four in his eight innings of work. Silva allowed one hit in the ninth en route to his second save of the season. Billings hit into three double plays.
Billings Noochie Varner extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games with a single in the sixth inning. He added another single in the night to finish 2 for 4 at the plate.
Mustangs starter Matt Pike, 1-2, was the losing pitcher. He struck out eight in 4 1/3 innings, but allowed five hits and three earned runs. The Mustangs used three other pitchers in the game.
The Mustangs, 12-6 overall and leading the Northern Division, finished their nine-game road trip with a 4-5 record. Billings will be home at Cobb Field this afternoon for a 4 p.m. game against Medicine Hat.
