BOZEMAN -- Payton Stott of Billings has qualified for the Big I national championship golf tournament.
Stott earned his berth by finishing second Thursday in the boys division at the state tournament at Bridger Creek Golf Course. Tate Tatom of Gallatin Gateway won the two-day event at even-par 142 (71-71), with Stott one shot back at 143 (69-74).
Sean Benson of Billings was third at 145 (69-76).
Both Tatom and Stott will move on to the national tournament, which is set for the Pete Dye Club in Bridgeport, W.Va., Aug. 5-8. It is ranked as one of the top junior tournaments in the nation.
Kalispell's Teigan Avery (141) and Helena's Carol Schulz (146) qualified for nationals on the girls side. Avery shot a 68 during the final round, which is a new women's course record.
