BOZEMAN — Montana State cowgirl Jyme Peterson received the first Shane Drury Scholarship, given to a cowboy or cowgirl who returns to competition after injury or illness.

Peterson, who returned to rodeo after two knee surgeries, received the $2,500 scholarship at the College National Finals Rodeo Friday in Casper, Wyo.

Drury, a bull rider, finished fourth at the CNFR in 1998 and two years later finished 10th in the PRCA standings two years later, the same year he was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a type of cancer.

He fought the disease into remission twice, but the cancer returned in 2005, for good. His treatments are now geared to helping him enjoy the time he has left.

Peterson was a little uncomfortable receiving the scholarship.

"Knee injuries aren't really comparable to cancer," she said Friday. "I thought there was going to be someone with a more tragic story."
