Stingrays shine in Great Falls

The Billings Aquatic Club Stingrays swim team had a strong showing in the recent short course season opener in Great Falls.

In the 8-under division, Seth Bonenberger and Julia Peterson were the boys and girls high-point award winners and Rylee O'Neill was second overall for the 8-under girls.

The 9-10 girls were led by Samantha Bonenberger, Hayley Ma and Madeline Sandstead. Ma and Bonenberger finished first and second in high points. For the 9-10 boys, Jack Leuthold and Ethan Harder combined to win nearly every race and finished 1-2 in high points.

Abbey Bryan won the high-point award for the 11-12 girls, with Alyssa Boese tying for second in high points. In the 13-14 boys, Pierce Oja recorded several fast times and won the high-point award, while Nathan Freiders won the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle.

The 15-16 BAC boys were led by Paul Allen and Matt Wehr who finished first and second respectively in high points.

Seahawks do well in first meet

The Billings YMCA Seahawks swim team had an impressive showing in the recent short course season opener in Great Falls.

Eight YMCA swimmers competed in 55 total events and earned 45 best times, including 15 first-place, five second-place and five third-place finishes.

Connor Maas placed first overall in the boys 11-12 age group and Sami Duval was second overall in the girls 13-14 division. Maas swam a "perfect meet," meaning he improved his time in each of his nine events - including a remarkable 44.17 seconds off his 200 freestyle time and 27. 64 seconds off his 200 IM time. Maas placed first in all nine events he swam and earned a sectionals time in the 100 backstroke.

Katelynn Passes finished first in the 9-10 girls 100 freestyle and third in both the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly.

In the girls 13-14 age group, Sami Duval won the 100 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke (shaving 6.78 seconds off her time), 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She also finished second in the 200 IM, 200 butterfly, 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle.

Legion to host basketball tourney

The Billings American Legion Baseball Program will host the Great American Shootout 7th-8th grade basketball tournament on Jan. 8-9 at Billings West.

Boys and girls divisions will be held for both 7th and 8th grade. Entry fee is $165 per team.
