The colors on the trees overlooking Riverfront Park have changed, but the lead runners have remained the same.

Senior T.J. Strange Owl raced to the boys championship at the Billings Invitational cross country meet with a 15:21 Saturday. In early September, the Colstrip standout won on the flat, 3-mile course in 15:23.

On the girls side, sophomore Bridgette Hoenke of Billings Senior won her third race of the year with a time of 18:33, edging Billings West's Carly Selleck by five seconds.

At the season-opening Billings Invitational, Hoenke finished second in 18:45 to Wyoming standout Sarah Balfour, who has won the Wyoming Class 4A title three straight years for Casper Natrona. Natrona did not compete in Billings this time and Hoenke was the runner to beat, setting a personal best.

"I just always want to do my best and I stayed really focused," said Hoenke. "I knew I had lots of competition and I wanted it today."

Billings West won the boys team title with all five runners finishing between places 9-17. Billings Senior was second and Colstrip third.

The Lady Broncs had four runners in the top 10 and the other finished 13th as Senior stormed to the girls' title with 34 points. Great Falls Russell was second with 85 and Miles City third with 126.

Strange Owl, who also won last year's season-opening Billings Invite in 15:25, is now 2-for-2 in Billings this year and in five meets has claimed first three times this year. In the other two meets, he said he finished second to a Class AA and C runner, beating all Class A competition.

"It feels good to win it again. It was a good day and good competition," said Strange Owl. "Every day in practice I get mentally tougher and stronger and bring it to the course."

Colstrip will compete in the Miles City Invitational next Saturday and then the Eastern A divisional Oct. 16 in Sidney. From now until state in Helena Oct. 23, Strange Owl's lone goal will be to work hard enough to win the event. Last year he finished second.

"Workouts will get a little harder and I'll watch my running film and all my ups and downs and correct them," said Strange Owl of his routine. "My coach is training me and my team pretty good."

Strange Owl's closest competitor, Aaron Hyams of Billings Central, was 26 seconds behind.

"Every thing went right today," said Strange Owl. "I felt good. I ate a good breakfast and my coach talked to me about my ups and downs and my senior year. And all my friends and family were here and it was a good day.

"I just got out in front and stayed there and just pushed myself. I was running against the clock. I just ran my race. I can't get too big-headed and have to stay positive."

Hoenke said herself and Selleck are really good friends and went to running camp together.

"Carly Selleck really pushed me hard," Hoenke said. "She's great."

Going into the meet, Hoenke said her goal was to run her second and third mile faster than the previous ones.

"I tried to get negative splits to improve my time," she said.

The Broncs are at the Helena Invitational Thursday and have the city meet scheduled for Oct. 13. State is Oct. 23 in Helena.

"I'll just keep practicing and always stay focused," said Hoenke. "I'll try my hardest and see what happens."
