GREENSBORO, N.C. — Volborg bull rider Jess Lockwood finished second in round one of the Professional Bull Riders Unleash the Beast Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday.

The 2017 world champion and second-ranked bull rider scored 87 points on Red Solo Cup to earn $2,750 and 60 world points. 

Lockwood gained ground on top-ranked Jose Vitor Leme of Brazil, who was bucked off.

Lockwood is now within 611.66 points of Leme.

Cooper Davis of Jasper, Texas, scored his ninth round win of the season when he rode Newsom for 88 points. Taking advantage of the re-ride, Davis earned $3,580 and 100 points. The 2016 PBR champ is No. 5 in the world standings.

The action continues on Sunday with round two and the championship round.
