Jess Lockwood of Volborg returned to top-tier Professional Bull Riders competition to share first place in the first round of the Ty Murray Invitational on Friday night.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Jess Lockwood returned to Professional Bull Riders elite series competition in a big way Friday night, riding the bull Legit for 89.5 points to share first place in the first round of the Ty Murray Invitational.

The 21-year-old Lockwood had missed nine top-tier events because of a broken collarbone. He had ridden earlier at a lower-tier event in Texas.

The 2017 world champion from Volborg became the first bull rider to ride Legit. The bull was 6-0 at top-level events this year and 9-0 overall.

Lockwood shared first place with Chase Outlaw. Both earned $3,165.
