Jess Lockwood of Volborg shared first place in the first round of the Professional Bull Riders event in New York City on Friday night. He also tied for second in the 15/15 Bucking Battle.

NEW YORK — Jess Lockwood got his new year started out right, sharing first place at the Professional Bull Riders 2019 in the first round of the opening event in New York City on Friday.

The 2017 PBR world champion from Volborg also split second place in the 15/15 Bucking Battle at Madison Square Garden.

Lockwood opened with an 88.25-point ride to share first place with Camron Cravens of Porum, Oklahoma. Each earned $5,750.

Lockwood then earned another $4,500 by sharing second place in the 15/15 Bucking Battle with an 89-point ride. He shared second place with Cody Teel of Kountze, Texas.

Matt Triplett of Kalispell shared fourth place in the first round with 86.25 points for $2,000. He was bucked off in the Bucking Battle.

Jose Vitor Leme of Brazil won the Bucking Battle with 91.25 points.

New York is considered a PBR major with the winner earning $100,000. Lockwood won the event in 2017.
