LAS VEGAS — Don’t ask Blake Knowles to take sides with anything related to Cat-Griz.

He’s been both.

The Oregon steer wrestler, who is competing at his first National Finals Rodeo, attended both the University of Montana and Montana State University.

Knowles also found time to attend Walla Walla (Wash.) Community College and finish his undergraduate degree at Eastern Oregon University.

“Four schools in four years,” said the 27-year-old Knowles with a smile.

Knowles began his collegiate rodeo career in Missoula at UM during 2001-02.

“I was on a rodeo scholarship,” said Knowles, who is from Heppner, Ore. “But to be honest, I really struggled that first year. I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.

“That summer I went out and rodeoed and wasn’t sure I was going back to school. So I decided to attend Walla Walla because it was closer to home.”

After earning his two-year associate’s degree at Walla Walla, he returned to the state of Montana, this time bringing his horses to Bozeman.

“I love Bozeman,” said Knowles, who was a Bobcat in 2003-04. “I still love the state of Montana. I wouldn’t take either one of those years back.”

But again, the lure of home beckoned and he finished at Eastern Oregon.

Along with being well-traveled in the college ranks, Knowles is also a second-generation competitor at the NFR. His father, long-time rodeo announcer Butch Knowles qualified for the NFR in saddle bronc riding.

“Like any father, I’m extremely proud of Blake,” the elder Knowles said. “This is a culmination of goals he set a long time ago. I don’t say much, he’s taken his own path. But I might try to subtle if I say something, just to plant the seed.”

The son appreciates the help.

“He’s helped me a lot,” said Blake Knowles of his father’s input. “He’s been here. He knows what it’s about. He just helps me more with the mental part of the game more than anything else.”

The NFR is truly a family affair. Along with Butch in the broadcast booth and his son competing in the arena, cousin Trevor Knowles is competing at his sixth NFR in steer wrestling.

“That’s kind of cool,” said Blake Knowles.

Any side bets among family?

“Trevor and I might bet a steak dinner once in a while,” Knowles said.

Blake Knowles is currently 13th in the world steer wrestling standings with $77,780 won. He placed in two NFR rounds, finishing third in the sixth round.

“Its been up and down, a true roller-coaster,” Knowles said of his NFR. “But you know what? I can’t complain. I’m here at the NFR, something I’ve worked for all my life. You can always find somebody who has it tougher.

“I’ve got no problems, I’m at the NFR. And I will always be thankful for that.”
