CASPER, Wyo. — Big Piney quarterback Levi Greenwood ran for a touchdown and passed for two more as the South built a 24-point halftime lead and held on for a 24-20 victory over the North Saturday in the 33rd Shrine Bowl at Cheney Alumni Field.
Cheyenne Central graduate Kraig Tafoya added a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter and the South's defense held the North scoreless until Thaine Wilkins of Gillette threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Bryson Herdt of Powell with 9:15 remaining.
Wilkins' 16-yard strike to Jacob Lohof of Lovell with 3:17 to play brought the North to within 24-20, but the South recovered the ensuing onside kick and burned all but 34 seconds off the clock.
Corey Wheeler of Cheyenne Central picked off Wilkins' desperation pass with 15 seconds to play to seal the win, giving the South a 16-5-2 lead in the series.
Greenwood, who had touchdown passes to Scott Johnson of Cheyenne East and Andy McKen of Star Valley, was named the offensive player of the game, while the South's Wes Scanlon of Evanston won defensive MVP honors.
