Bozeman has become a Saturday night staple at the boys AA state tournament and the Hawks were there again, claiming third place with a 57-53 victory over Butte.

It's the 14th time in coach Mike Cole's 18 seasons the Hawks have brought home a trophy. It is their fifth third-place trophy.

Bozeman led 55-53 when Butte's Todd Hildreth was fouled with 3.8 seconds remaining. Hildreth missed the first shot, and after two timeouts, tried to intentionally miss the second. However, he was called for a lane violation and the Hawks' Jake Rios clinched the victory by making two free throws.

Rios led the Hawks with 17 points. The 5-foot-11 senior guard connected on five 3-point shots. Jamison McBride added 11 points. Nate Weidenaar had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists for Bozeman which finished with a 16-9 record.

Jeff Edwards, a 6-8 sophomore center, scored 14 for Butte before leaving with what appeared to be an ankle injury with 3:12 left. Hildreth contributed 13 points and Matt Paul had 11.

The Hawks led much of the way by narrow margins, but Butte forged a 49-49 tie on a follow shot by Hildreth with 4:19 remaining. McBride made two free throws to return the lead to Bozeman and Bryson Halse's driving layup gave the Hawks a four-point lead.

Hildreth countered from underneath and Butte got the ball back when McBride missed two free throws. Bozeman, however, forced a jump ball and had the possession arrow in their favor. McBride was fouled again and made both shots this time for a 55-51 lead.

Kyle Burgman's two free throws cut it to two points again and Butte got a chance to tie when Rios misfired twice at the line with 48.8 seconds to go.

Butte closed the season at 16-8.

Bozeman 64, Senior 52

The Bozeman Hawks and the Billings Senior Broncs met up for the third time this season Saturday morning in a loser-out contest at the Billings Skyview gym.

The Hawks, winners of the first two meetings in Eastern AA Conference match-ups, were on the losing end for the first two quarters, thanks to tough defense behind a 2-3 zone implemented by the Broncs.

But Bozeman began to rally halfway through the second period, closing the quarter on an 8-4 run, including four unanswered by Ryan Short to cut the deficit to one.

Then, on the opening possession of the second half, Nate Weidenaar connected for two points on a lob pass, giving Bozeman the lead they'd never relinquish, as the Hawks picked up a 64-52 win to advance to the third place contest.

"It took us awhile to get going," said Bozeman coach Mike Cole. "Senior packed in that zone, and we had to shoot some threes, and none of them were going in.

"Probably from the middle of the second quarter until the end of the game, our guys were firing from good on all cylinders. It was fun to see us wake up and decide to win this game."

The Broncs led by as many as nine points in the first quarter, thanks in part to the defense and a 7-0 spurt to start the game. The Senior defense forced Bozeman into 3 of 18 shooting from downtown (17 percent) in the opening 16 minutes.

Bozeman then busted out of the locker room with an 8-0 run (12-0 over a span of 5:02) to virtually put the game away.

Weidenaar's duce gave the Hawks a 27-26 lead. He then had two big assists as Casey Milliron (two baskets) and Jake Rios (one basket) finally found some easy baskets and breathing room.

"Our defense picked up, and our offense got going, and it just went from there," added Cole, whose team had to get ready to play its third game in less than 24 hours. "It makes you feel a lot better after winning a game, instead of going down like we did last night (Friday to West in the semifinals).

The Hawks were led by Rios, who netted 14 points despite going 2 of 13 from long-range. Milliron added 10, going 5 of 5 from the field.

J. J. Peterson recorded a game-high 16 points for Senior. Billings also received 10 points from both Mark Desin and David Stordahl.

Butte 59, Capital 49

The Bulldogs used a big second half to overcome Helena Capital in Saturday morning loser-out action.

Butte scored 43 points in the final two quarters behind Matt Paul. Paul scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half.

After Capital took a 29-16 lead, Paul started the Butte rally by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers than triggered a 10-2 run. Paul finished the quarter with a 3-pointer and Kyle Burgman made a steal and layup to give the Bulldogs a 38-37 lead.

Paul, who had five threes in the game, added another in the fourth quarter and Burgman hit six straight free throws as the Bulldogs pulled away.

Burgman scored 15 points and Jeff Edwards added 14 plus three blocked shots.

Devin Sullivan scored 14 to lead Capital.
