DILLON - Senior guard Chase Sukut hit for a season-high 30 points Friday night as Rocky Mountain College rallied from an early 13-point deficit to beat Montana Western 88-71 in the Frontier Conference opener for both men's teams.
Besides Sukut's outburst, the Battlin' Bears, 1-0 and 12-4, also benefited from the 19 points and 14 rebounds of senior forward Devin Uskoski. James Bulluck contributed 17 points and Nate Richardson 13 for Rocky, which had 11 3-pointers and out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 42-31.
Western, 0-1 and 7-8, received 18 points from Terry Hauser, 14 from Chad Myers and 12 from Brandon Lawson.
The Bulldogs used an 18-4 run to take a 32-19 lead. Rocky roared back on a 20-5 spurt to move ahead 39-37 at halftime. Rocky outscored Western 13-0 in the first five minutes of the second half.
"They got up on us a little bit, but we didn't panic," said Rocky coach Bill Dreikosen. "We stuck to our game plan, played hard and played together. It was a real good team effort."
Rocky shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half, while Western made just 25 percent. The Bears also went 20 of 25 from the foul line in the last 20 minutes.
The Bears will play at Montana Tech tonight.
