BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Calin Schell scored 17 points and had eight rebounds to help Western Washington hold off Montana State Billings 72-67 Thursday night in men's basketball.
It was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Yellowjackets (5-7, 0-1) play at Seattle Pacific Saturday.
Michael Hall scored a game-high 23 points for MSUB, while Derrick Wright had 19. Travis Bunker added 11. Hall made six 3-pointers.
MSUB pulled within 68-67 on a 3-pointer by Hall with 44 seconds remaining in the game. But Morris Anderson hit four free throws in final 21 seconds to help the Vikings preserve the win.
Steve Alford added 15 points for WWU, while David Brittinen had 13.
