It should come as no surprise that the origin of bear spray involves an unruly bear.

Slate.com recounts the not-so-welcome adventures of Growly the grizzly in Glacier National Park in the 1970s.

Growly was a menace, "clawing up cabins and campgrounds until he was captured and relocated by park rangers, at which point he’d crawl his way back to civilization to execute another round of property damage."

Growly was about to be "destroyed" when a University of Montana zoology student started doing experiments on him that led to the creation of bear spray.
