The Montana Department of Transportation issued the recommendation for I-90 from 10 miles south of Lodge Grass to the Wyoming state line. The road is icy with blowing and drifting snow and zero visibility.
Also Tuesday morning, the road closure was lifted on U.S. 191 from Harlowton to Eddie's Corner, the junction with Montana 3. The closure was ordered Monday.
The area from Harlowton to Garneill is mostly dry but does have scattered snowpack and ice. From Garneill to Eddie's Corner, the road is icy with blowing and drifting snow and zero visibility.
Interstate 90 is snowcovered on Homestake pass and has ice and snowcover from Manhattan to Bozeman. Bozeman Pass is intermittently icy to Springdale, and roads are mostly dry with scattered snowpack and ice to Reed Point and into Billings.
I-94, from Billings to Ballantine, has snowpack and ice, with similar conditions from Billings to Shawmut on Montana 3.
Most other roadways were snowpacked and icy in central and southeastern Montana.
Ice made driving treacherous in Billings on Tuesday morning, but some melting had started by midmorning. Sanders had laid down gravel and sand at main intersections, but many vehicles continued to have problems stopping, especially on side roads.
