Artist talk and reception set for Sept. 17
MSU BILLINGS NEWS — The Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University Billings will host artist Melanie Johnson's exhibition “Fieldwork” through Sept. 17. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
A talk by the artist will be held on Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. in Library Building Room 148, followed by a reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
“These drawings emerge from my experiences growing up in a semi-rural Midwestern landscape and returning to it through sustained observation, tracing how it changes, what disappears, and what persists,” Johnson says. “Moving between close looking and memory, the work places plants and animals at the center while reflecting on attention, instability, and the effort to remain present within a shifting environment.”

Johnson is an artist and an educator. Born in Kansas City, Mo., she earned a BFA from Missouri State University and an MFA from the Henry Radford School of Art at Indiana University, Bloomington. She is currently professor of painting and drawing at University of Central Missouri. She lives in Prairie Village, Kansas.
Johnson has exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at MANIFEST Gallery and Drawing Center in Cincinnati; University of Kentucky; Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania; the University of Alabama; and Colorado State University. Group exhibitions include the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, the Automat Gallery in Philadelphia, and First Street Gallery in New York.
She is currently an artist in residence at Studios Inc in Kansas City.
The Northcutt Steele Gallery is located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the MSU Billings University Campus. The gallery, which is supported in part by funds from Associated Students of MSU Billings, is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
